Beginning in 2000 and spanning many years, I had the tremendous privilege to work with two extraordinarily focused and visionary improvisers, Alan Lechusza and Vikas Srivastava, as the Christopher Adler Trio. We shared a common vision for wide-ranging and exploratory free improvisation that embraced any of the diverse musical genres that spontaneously emerged in performance. My time with the trio, including a nearly two-year run of weekly performances at the San Diego restaurant and artistic space Galoka, was profoundly influential on my development as a musician.

After working together for months, as I was set depart on a summer overseas, we met late in the night on June 5, 2000 in the basement of a university building with a DAT recorder and two microphones. We encountered a realm of meditative music drawing upon our respective traditions that was unlike anything we had recorded before. The music that night was a moment of intimacy and power that stood as a private icon for the band, and has since become one of our most cherished musical memories.
